Local artists create “bad art” for Season 2 of Portlandia

Results to be auctioned to benefit local charities.

Portland, OR- January 19, 2012
Portlandia Season 2, Episode 5, “Cops Redesigned”, aired on February 3rd. It featured a sketch called “Good Walls Bad Art” spoofing the cliche art that is often shown in coffee shops and other such public venues. Featuring themes like flying coffee cups, and kitties hanging from tree branches, this is the type of work that many arts connoisseurs love to hate.

Portlandia Production Designer, Tyler Robinson, enlisted the help of local art consultant, Bridget Larrabee, aka “Art Scout,” to organize a task force of local artists and challenge them to create “bad art” to share on national TV. The experience proved both challenging and rewarding for professional painters and photographers that were involved: Anna Magruder, Shawn Demarest, Andrew Ferguson and Rebecca Shapario, Jolie Guillebeau, Jenn Feeney, Nicole Daughters, Erica Lee Sears.

Once filming was complete, each original work was autographed by Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, and guest star, Sean Hayes. Fred and Carrie, who are large supporters of the Humane Society, requested that one of the cat-inspired pieces be donated to the Humane Society Auction “This piece of art gifted to us will go a long way towards saving many homeless pets in our community” - Barbara Baugnon. Another piece has been promised to KZME 107.1, a local arts-focused radio station. There are a few more works that are still available for donation. Erik Abel was one of the first artists that signed up with Art Scout back in early 2008. He built my beautiful Website www.myartscout.com and has been a wonderful artists to work with.

These paintings are pieces from his Oceanic Temple and Weather Pattern collection, and have been in inventory here while he traveled for over 2 1/2 years in New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, the Tongan and Fijian Islands. Erik is heavily influenced by and involved in the surf/skate/snow sports industry and working as a freelance graphic designer and art director for over 15 years, Abel's method of bold, graphical imagery fused with his loose brush, pen and pencil work seems to find a growing niche of it's own in the fast rising "Urban Contemporary" art movement. Among the clients his style has attracted are Billabong, Reef, Oxbow, Maui & Sons, and Surfing Magazine.

Mixer Match is a chance for local artists to show their portfolios to Portland art professionals in a fun speed date like setting. 20 curators and 40 artists, each artist has only 2 min to impress. The pressure will be on, luckily Deschutes Brewing is sponsoring the event.

The event takes place tonight at Design Within Reach it is a collaboration of Etsy, Etsy Pdx, PNCA, Museum of Contemporary Craft.

It will be a whole lot of fun!!!!

“Sometimes I have a plan. I begin with a notion or feeling I wish to express. Other times I choose a color and begin to paint. I see what it looks like after I have done what I’ve done and I choose another color which relates, expressing my mood. Sometimes I involve wispy lines which flow around corralling variants within the color or hard straight lines to connect aspects or sever them. Once I find some overall dynamic presenting itself I utilize various other colors and lines to emphasize or sedate.

With the encaustic medium all this lovely control flies out the window. The layers of wax need to be fused to the layers below to ensure clarity and prevent the layers from separating. This fusing process liquefies the elements and suddenly they are flowing together, running loose and free like some sort of liberated gaggle. All my veeeery important decisions become compromised every time I fuse.
Slowly I realized this medium is more like another will and less like some matter to be pushed around. Like a marriage where my prerogative is not the only one involved, I begin to allow the changes to happen, even become excited at the prospect. This has been hard for me. I like to be in complete control but as in life certain “art making” requires a stark view of oneself and what better way to accomplish this then having all of one’s choices challenged.”

After a career in graphic design, Michael Kelley has pursued a slightly different road into letterpress. He has operated the Pushmepullyou Press in Portland for 15 years, and enjoys combining graphic design with the crafts of typesetting, linoleum carving, printing and bookbinding, which continues to provide creative challenges.

Rebecca Wild is an artist and calligrapher in Portland. Her work pairs her love of letterforms and calligraphy with the luminous characteristics of drawing materials and paint. The work represented in this show, Word Play, reflects a broad usage of text as a tool for both conveying message and creating abstraction. We will be unveiling a mixed media mural, which if you can't tell from this image is the BP Oil logo surrounded by shark heads. On May 7th feed your soul and stretch your legs with Pedal Bike Tours and Art Scout Art Consulting on a free bike tour from Pedal’s shop (2249 N Williams) to First Friday, southeast Portland’s version of Last Thursday where galleries and other businesses throw a street-side party of art, food and community.

Thursday March 25th the Gary Hirsh "You name it Show 2", and the "Stop being such a crazy person" Series is available for your enjoyment.

The Opening in 5-8pm at The Living Room, 1422 NE Alberta St.

This show is awesome!!! Mostly because Gary rocks but also it is interactive... As the title leads you to believe you get to take a stab at naming his artwork. There is a box set up and you can just slip you creative ideas inside, and when someone buys a painting they get to choose from all the suggested titles, if your is pick you get a t-shirt with the painting on the front and your title on the back!!! How cool is that.

Also Gary is putting up his " Stop being such a crazy person" series, a collection of drawings that remind us all to take 15 min out of our crazy day to do nothing. All drawings are original, small, cute, and a dollar!!!

This show of map paintings by Rachel Austin is fun and whimsical, with maps as the background for her beautiful flowers, and birds this will put us all in the swing of Spring. Rachel is also painting a mural on the wall to frame her art work.

Bringing bikes, art, wine, and food together seems so logical for Portland culture, I wonder why we didn't think of it before.

Art by Bike will be a monthly event and starts March 5th at the Pedal Bike Tours 2249 N Williams at 5:30 and then venture on to 3 galleries in the Southeast. So come feed your soul and stretch your legs.

This is a free event for everyone, bring kids, grandparents, and anyone you know who would love to spend their Friday night on their bike taking in the fabulous culture that Portland has to offer.

First stop: B. Rogers Gallery, 2415 NE Broadway St. for the Sky, Roads, and Rivers pastel show by Andrea McFarland. B. Rogers gallery will be featuring Oregonzola Cheese .

Second Stop: Studio 2507, 2507 SE Clinton St. showing monotypes, paintings, and ceramic tiles, by Annie Meyer and map paintings, and mural work by Rachel Austin. Studio 2507 will be featuring a lovely Cabernet Shiraz blend from Yarra Valley, Australia.

When I passed the crying clown on my way out of the Velveteria Museum on Saturday, I paused and gave it a knowing look. The owners of this classic Portland keepsake are moving to "dryer" pastures, and taking their 2,000 velvet paintings with them. Caren and Carl are talking about the possibility of re-opening the black fuzzy palace in Ventura California.

Before I moved to Portland I read "Fugitives and Refugees, A Walk in Portland" Oregon by Chuck Palahniuk. Since I considered myself a refugee I planned to visit all the odd places in Portland that Chuck wrote about. From Voodoo doughnuts all the way to the self cleaning house in Newberg. The Velveteria was one of the many places I always assumed I would make it to sometime... I am so glad I went before they packed it all up. It was truly a must have experience. They will be greatly missed.
